Stefan George, German poet, editor, and translator, was at the center of an influential literary and academic circle known as the "Georgekreis." This included many leading young writers of the day such as Friedrich Gundolf and Ludwig Klages. He was thought of by his contemporaries as a "prophet" and a "priest," or the "Master," as he had his disciples call him.
